"RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication (but it's also been known as Rich Site Summary and Real Slim Shady). It is what it claims to be: a quick and easy way to create and use syndicated content such as news headlines and announcements." (Source)
Some of the postings in the English RSS will correspond with pages in the blog section, and sometimes there will be separate postings which point only to external blogs, those of third parties. Links to such external web site (for which I am in no way responsible) will be found in decorative thumbnails and pictures throughout the blog text as well, as regular readers might have become accustomed to.
All blogs have validity within their own context, whether they are pulling 10,000 visitors a day or are a nanoblog aimed only at close friends and family. (Source)

05.05.05: New York Trivia
Kategori: happiness
Kategori: technology
New York is called the Big Apple because in the 1920s a sportswriter for the Morning Telegraph named John Fitzgerald overheard stable hands in New Orleans refer to New York's racetracks as The Big Apple. A decade later, jazz musicians adopted the term to refer to New York City, especially Harlem, as the jazz capital of the world. There are many apples on the trees of success, they said, but when you pick New York City, you pick the big apple.

20.03.05: hiding email addresses
Kategori: web code
Sarven Capadisli has published some tips on how to hide e-mail addresses from bots and spiders crawling (out of potholes in) the web.
The proposed 'CSS pseudo-element :after' method is really interesting, and I should find some time to look into this CCS2 possibility as well.
Mr Capadisli doesn't mention the meta tags though. Based on me own humble experience, I still believe in
- <meta http-equiv="siteinfo" content="http://www.aage.no/robots.txt" />
- <meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow,noimageclick" />
- <meta name="googlebot" content="noarchive,noindex,nosnippet,follow" />
- <meta http-equiv="Distribution" content="IU" />
- <meta http-equiv="Rating" content="Restricted" />
14.03.05: Clearing floats
Kategori: web code
Last year, as I tried to learn the CSS float system through redesigning this web site, I didn't really understand the mysteries of floats and clears. As a result my footers/bottom doesn't always hang on to the rest of the layout the way it 'should'. These days I'm working on two sites for 'customers' and hopefully the new sites will behave better in different configurations than mine do. Holly 'n John points to a CSS 2 pseudo-element :after method which might become useful. Think I'll try out the proposed clearfix div. Check it out!

Word HTML Cleaner :: Strip the gunk from MSWord HTML!
Kategori: technology and happiness
Finally a wonderful new for those starting out with a (puke) MicroSoft generated documents:
A tool that strips proprietary Microsoft tags and other cruft from Word HTML documents, leaving basic formatting intact. File sizes are greatly reduced, and the returned HTML is easier to read, revise and employ.
Wish I had that one three years ago...
20. February 2005: Uh-oh, bad news for coders trying to accomodate the visually impared
Kategori: technology
The technique does not work as expected. With rare exceptions, the three most used screen reader programs do not discover, and do not speak the material hidden with display:none. The people you are trying to reach with this technique will never hear it, nor see it. If you threw out the previous technique (images with links), you have actually regressed.

The origin of this web site is Norway and most of the content is in the native language. Translations into English and German are available, as well as a section in the second Norwegian language, Nynorsk. Dazed and Confused, or just feeling a little Robert Plant-ish? The Language in the English section will be held in British English, with some slang from the Americas as well as from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and some Pidgin. (It's no secret that some nations are a little on the lingua-centric side. But who cares?)

31. December 2004: Annus Horribilis! Short summary of this year's miseries
Kategori: happiness
Mid-January I suddenly lost my job. Then there were these two months or so where I spent most of my time in pure agony – quite an introvert period this spring was. At first it was a bitch just trying to get along. But after a while it got possible. Then it got bearable. And then it got doable. Eventually I am becoming nearly as productive as I once was. And now I have a train to catch. Talk to you next week, or year...

Microsoft Metadata Chuckle of the Day, another laughing matter by MS
Kategori: technoboy
During explaining how well MS Office performs in comparison to Open Office, the metadata of the produced sales document discloses MS' preferred choise of hard- and software. MS uses QuarkXPress on a Macintosh and publishes the result an Adobe-file, which is an excellent combination. There were no Microsoft products nor Windows configuration involved. An excellent choice!
